Has anyone tried ripping longerons from a 2X4? I believe 2X4 are spruce. Not sure if they are of a different species than the hobby grade or aircraft grade spruce.

I am building the canard of a Dumas AVL and the supplied spruce sticks are a little undersized. Have a good length of a 2X4 without many knots that I can rip into the size I want.

Thanks, k

pine.. not a chance.. go to Aircraft Spruce and look at there Stika Spruce. You can buy cut offs that are up to 48" long. SUPER STUFF!

Thanks guys for your replies.
Sitka spruce is great for wing spars. Long uniform grains and it is harder than spruce. I looked up on the internet and learned that 2X4 can be any softwood. Must likely pine or fir. So I am not going to take any chances and will be driving over to my LHS to pick up some Sig spruce.

I have to agree with Grim on that one. Every LHS I've been to in the last three years had bass and balsa, not one piece of spruce. Due to that, I ordered a stack of strip and triangle stock from ACS a while back. Since they only had 1/8 thick stick stock in 1/4 and wider, I ordered mine at 5/32, allowing me to rip it down to 1/8 square. For that task, I "bit the bullet", to the tune of $470 and now have this little gem, and accessories, waiting to be put to work:

I have a Dremel table saw.. (I few of them truth be told).. if you can find one on ebay its worth a look.

I actually looked for one of those before I ordered the one I now have, didn't find one. I guess I know why, GRIM CORNERED THE MARKET!!!!!!!!!
