Jim,You were arguing the validity of my suggestion, so I simply pointed out how it can be done. The original poster didn't even ask about a rigger. The only nonsense here is your evasive attitude. We have had right pull rudders on all our gas boats for years. I offer ideas that work for us. And people can take it or leave it. That's what a forum is for - sharing ideas. Our under 27 cc. gas monos run mid 80s on bad water, and our SRI Pioneer motors have set 2 IMPBA gas records in only 2 events. So if you need to see our stuff run, come to trials. We put it on water, not on video to entertain people.

This is probably the best & easiest method for most model boat builders who want to improve their systems. 5/32" piano wire, which is available in any hobby shop, is certainly more rigid. However this hard drawn steel wire, cannot be machined without the use of carbide end mills & drills.

We build our own push rods out SS welding rods we buy from the local welding shop.we buy two sizes one for throttle and a bigger size for the steering .we cut the length we need and thread each end and we use the heavy duty ends from Dubro ball end with 256 screw and on the other servo we use the heavy duty Clevis type that has the lock type keeper on it.this works very well on all boats.

I have custom length pushrods available in Stainless Steel and Titanium. Monster nylon links that never wear, don't need a backer nut to keep in place and are strong as the fastest heaviest twin boat needs. No more fixing the linkage after wipeouts.

Thanx Ray, good link. Back in the day.... the same idea but instead of the custom keeper, we would do the same hole in the rod and L bend, but then leave the wire on the outside of the rod and use heavy thread to wrap around the end were they overlapped. Cover with expoy. Doesn't look as cool or professional but works just as well.

That's nice of you Bob, I'm glad you liked the video.
That video is from my channel, and Ray was kind enough to share it (thanks Ray!). Many more can be found at the link below.
Please share feedback in the video comments section... I'm trying to be helpful with these videos and appreciate everyone's comments, ideas, and suggestions.

Something you probably don't want to hear, but for your next build, address the disease instead of the symptoms ( flex ). Mount your rudder servo as close to the transom as you can. There are many excellent waterproof servos on the market and engine rail mounting is a good option. Use a rudder horn ( ie; Speedmaster ) that has the rod link on the starboard side to "pull" the rudder through a right turn. A short/stiff pull rod is not going to have to be over-engineered to stop anything.

When you rig a boat, ask yourself WHY you are doing things as you are, before-hand. Be your own builder.
I made this as a solution.. most every servo is water proof! And this is my setup for a tight tub rigger fits the bill nicely for a rh push short 4-40 setup... why doesn’t a big name make these lol gold mine !

I would just like to add my 2 cents. I make two steering rod sets, one for (primarily) gas tunnel that is 2 pair of 1/4" aluminum solid rods, with industrial qiality ball joint ends and secure connectors that allow infinite length adjustment. They are made to haul a gas outboard drive back and forth with a 1750 oz/in gearbox, so they should handle most anything. They will take a hard shock without bending or breaking. I also make a lighter set of 3/16" aluminum rods, with ball joints at both ends, and similar connectors. I would sell them singly if anyone wanted just one. The rods can be bent to a full 90 degrees without breaking, so "Z" bends are possible. Nobody who has bought a set has ever mentioned wearing them out. See them at Lawlessdrives.com, Either set will fit up to (at least) a 4 foot boat. Order by phone or e-mail. in stock.

Send me the details and this "big name" will gladly make them. Lawless Drives

here are what I'm using for heavy duty steering pushrods- machined aluminum alloy suspension arms with heavy duty threaded steel ball-link rod ends (3mm ID). No flex. They comne in various sizes, and sets. Beautifully anodized:

That is pretty much what my steering rod set looks like, except I use raw aluminum rod and industrial molded plastic rod ends at the servo end. Straight or right angle rod ends at the drive end. With two pairss of rods joined with a clamp in the middle, the length is easily adjustable.
