So, I won this recently in a boat race. I need some help with the following:

1. Who made this boat? Does it look familiar to anyone?

2. Is there a place to get the decal's for it? I plan to do it up true to the real one.

3. Any paint codes available for this?

4. Any places I can get parts for this boat?

This will be my first 1/8 scale boat and I am also looking to run it electric. From the looks of it, I have a lot of sanding in my future.

Thanks.

Looks like the 1980 PaynPak the one that John Walters flipped and did 3 turns in the air, but not sure who made it Dumas maybe? but not sure.

My first guess would be Arrow-marine They always used gel-coat on there stuff..

Not a Dumas, interior isn't right for that. Can't tell if it's wood or glass so that makes it even harder. Not an RCBC hull either, from what I can tell. You can contact Mike McKnight or Wesley's here in the forum for decals. As far as parts, there's several places that I can think of, depending on what you are looking for, be it hardware or body parts

The boat is all glass and when I look it over I don't see any signs that it has ever been run. No holes in it anywhere for mounts, shaft etc. The person I got it from has been racing for many years and has a very large collection of hulls and boats. He usually buys boats that have some sort of history or are known in some way for their performance etc. He really cannot remember the history of this particular boat, so curious about it.

The turbine intakes seem a bit different than some I have seen in that they are more realistic. Might be a clue.

Crazy that was my boat from 2005. It was bought off of ebay and the deck was all one piece no cut out fro engine well. I had to make the engine rails and lip to hold cowling. I was told it was made by Troy Mcintyre. I never ran the hull nor did I drop the radio box into the bottom like that. The year of the real hull was 1980-81. I did not like the hull do to the depth of the sponsons and the location of the break it looked like it would blow over all the time. Just way to much lift under that thing. Also the turbine pipe is backwards in the picture. Any help you need I will try to help.

There you go, I knew someone would have the story on this boat. Good news, the turbine pipe is not mounted, just stuck it in there for the picture. What you are telling me fits what I see. It appears this boat has never been run or put together. So I have a 10 year(roughly speaking) hydro that has never yet made it into the water. Chuckle. I was thinking more of putting it together running electric (that is my background) for fun and not so much for racing.

Couple of questions:

1. I am planning on removing the radio box(don't need it for electric). Do I need that block of would under the hull that is screwed through the radio box on the other side? Sounds like the original design did not have that there.

2. I understand what you mean by the depth of the sponsons (more room to pack in air), but what is the "break" and it's location on the boat?? I am assuming this relates to diffusion of the air that packs underneath the hull? How might I want to alter that possibly?

3. Is Troy Mcintyre still around?

If I decide to go ahead with the project, I will show the posts and pictures here. I am working on a Mono right now, So I will not get to this one for a few months probably.

The break is the point the bottom changes from flat in the back to an angle up to the nose, further forward would give you more angle. It would probally be ok as is.

You can remove that box and make the bottom nose flat, you could cut out the motor mount area side walls so you have more room for batteries.

Unfortunaly Troy passed away few years ago, he was in Washington state.

What Phil wrote is right on the break. The best way to help calm the boat down is wicker bills or straight edge spoilers on the bottom towards the front. Remove the radio box plate it over not sure about removing the engine rails thou. They where a giant pain to install.

Also, sounds like dumb question, but what is the most accurate "white" for this hull. Prefer a water based paint, but I can do either in a pinch.

Also, in the past I have used House of Kolor primer which works great, but stinks like nobody's business. Any good primers to recommend that don't pollute the entire neighborhood. Chuckle.

Hey, found my old post.  Thought those who gave me the background on this boat might like to see it now as I just got it back from the painters.  Not really planning to race it, just run it around for fun and enjoy it.   Probably will need to put in an air dam, but that remains to be seen.   I noticed some version of this "real" boat has some front wings mounted on the spars that go to the sponsons.  I might take advantage of that and build some to get some down force.   First though, is I am going to finish it and take it for a run!

The canards were a short term experiment that failed.  It was found that they actually INCREASED the chance of blowing over rather than give more control due to the close proximity to the boat's bulnose

And 7 months later.....done. The maiden run will be in a few weeks when I can get her out.

Jim, just one thing for when you repaint. The black and orange didn't wrap over the rear of the boat, it stopped at the rear deck edge. I doubt anyone will say anything, just an FYI

Man that looks GREAT! I am so happy to see it done. Let us know how it runs.
