While measuring that positive and negative angel of the lower unit on a tunnel. What are you guys using? What tricks are to be had. I'm sure someone has got something slick and easy.

Thanks

Tim

A lot of cavitation plates are not parallel with the prop shaft. I always used a straight edge coming off the surface of the setup board, and adjusted the prop shaft angle in relation to the straight edge. I only ever ran negative angle, and only a very slight amount to fine tune the ride attitude of the boat.

I just use a digital caliper, to measure from the table to the underside of the cavitation plate, at the furthest forward point, and furthest backward point. This tells me how much positive or negative I have in the lower.

To be honest my Cav plate is parallel with the propshaft but its not all that important

unless you want to try somebody else's setup.

you can remove the prop and slide on a tight fitting tube thats say 12 inchs long then put the incedence meter

on there.

as long as you use the same procedure each time then you will be able to get very accurate results

doing it either way

12" 3/16ths id brass tube on the propshaft, i used to press the propshaft snug against the drive dog to see the angle on the setup board, i cut a slot in the setup board that fits the lower unit...

jack garcia taught me this

If U don't want to pack around Ur set up board .  I use one of these digital angle finders in the pits. Set the boat on Ur startup stand set the meter on the cav. plate. zero the meter and then u can increase or decrease  the prop shaft angle from Ur base setup board angle till Ur happy  the meters are available from Amazon, Harbor fright ECT.

The unit I bought from Menard's is a piece of junk... can't hold onto a value- too sensitive... think I paid ~$29 for it.

Put the boat on a glass flat surface (Wood is not flat, stands are not flat any difference in the levelness of the surface will throw the boat off) glass is 100% level. The boat must be on a 100% flat true surface, thats glass. Use a 1/16" thick length of plate "steel" (I use 1/16th"x2' length) I use steel plate because it wont bend or droop. Place steel plate under the boat. Position prop so the steel plate will be in between the blades. using the props center line adjust the thrust angle.
I run my props center line 100% level to the water line and straight back, no wasted thrust. I balance my boats on the fly with the 3rd channel and the battery's weight.

Using a tube pressed onto the drive dog is good, but who's to say the tube is actually pushed on level?

Kevin.....Being in the glazing business for many years...glass can have a bit of bend to it ...if your using any thing less than 1/4" plate glass I would not trust it...granite on the other hand is flat...and heavy...and cheaper than 1/4 plate glass for the size...just a fyi
