I have a .21 nitro mono that I use to race. I would like to set it up for electric racing. I don't know anything about setting up a electric boat. Do anyone have any instructions on how to set up a electric mono? What motor, speed control and power supply would you recommend for a mono?

For a mono of that size. You might think about the aquacraft ul1 setup. It's an aquacraft 2030kv motor and 60a esc. Run on 4s. Or another motor in that class. (I'm by no means an expert) but that seems to be a popular choice. Perhaps an aeromarine challenger. Or maybe a delta force from O.S.E. https://www.offshoreelectrics.com/search.php

What mono is it? I've tried to convert a 21 size Calcraft and it doesn't like the extra weight.

Hooks Sr,

The questions that need answering first:

Do you want to race it?

If yes, which class? P Mono or P-Ltd mono? P mono is open power, P-Ltd is spec power like an OPC class.

Are both raced in D9 or only one?

I would like to race it put I don’t know anything about the different classes. What would be a good class for a first time electric boat racer?

Sr.,

I would highly recommend starting off with the P-Limited set-up. This uses the Aquacraft UL-1 motor with a 2030kv on 4 cells. You will only need a 100A speed control and you can use similar props to your A mono. Speeds will also be very similar. The motors are a little fragile so you have to be careful not to overprop.

P-Ltd Speed controller: https://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ker-seaking-180-v3

Batteries: Look at a pair of 30-45C 35000-5000mAh 4S lipo batteries. Suggested manufacturers are: Roaring Top, Dinogy, Hobbyking Graphene

If you want to do a full P set-up:

Tyler,

I notice that you don't recommend Revolectrix batteries. Do you find the ones you call out to perform better then the Revos. Just curious. Some people who seem to be fairly knowledgeable, seem to favor the Revos. Do you have any experience with them? Given the relative cost of batteries, I'd love to hear what someone with the documented track record such as yourself has to say.

Regards,

Bob

I second Tyler on P limited classes. They have become some of the most popular in our club. You will love how trouble free your boats will be compared to nitro boats. The standard P limited mono is the Tower Revolt. It uses a slightly lower rpm motor than the UL-1, but that doesn't seem to matter.

Bob,

I just don't have any experience with the Revo's. I am sure they are pretty good. In recent years all the manufacturers have stepped up their game. It now comes down to performance/longevity/cost.

The best performance versus cost seem to be the HK Graphenes. I have been really impressed with the performance of these cells and the consistency from pack to pack.

The Roaring Top 80C line have been the highest performing packs. I use these mostly for SAW and 2-lap over the others, but they make great heat racing cells as well.

Mark at Dinogy has always been at the top of my list for customer service and he works closely with his manufacturer to get the right cells and performance. He can also build special packs which is a plus.

Hi Bob just to comment on Revo's I bought 6 packs of 6S 5000 60C two years ago and have I dead pack after very short use (5 cicles)...the rest is working very consistent so maybe was a bad unit. Actually that pack was divided in 3S and 2S with one dead cell.Gill

I too think that a P-Limited setup would work best for the OP. Speeds are good, cost is a bit lower than full P Mono, and there seem to be more racers in this class. However, I would suggest a different motor, either the AQ 1800 or the AQ/ProBoat 1500 motors. These are more forgiving to prop choice and frankly some of the top FE racers use these motors. The AQ 2030 is a decent motor but IMO is not the best for a new FE boater. The 1500 Kv motors are my choice.

All the power in an FE boat is in the pack. The better the pack the better the performance. Compared to nitro it's like a higher nitromethane content in the fuel....
