hi! i have asked about this in other forum with less success.

i have 2 IB 6-cell matched packs and 1 IB 6cell loose pack. these are used packs, charges about 3700-3800mah. now i want to build a 7cell pack, since my esc (futaba mc330) can only support 7cells.

now i am thinking of getting a single cell from the loose pack and solder it to matched pack to make a 7cell.

my question will be is it ok to mix matched and loosed cells? and are there anything i should be concerned of?

thank you and any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

thanks a lot

As long as the cells are the same kind (all IB3800s, etc.) you can do this. (If the cells are different types, the do not do this.) The new 7-cell pack may no longer be well matched, but for sport running you can certainly live with that.

Before you first fully charge the new 7-cell pack, balance it. Put it on the charger at about 1/2 amp and charge until it peaks. This will insure that all cells are fully charged; otherwise you can overheat a cell when charging the pack at a higher ampre rate. Then use the pack as you normally would.

well i can't disconnect one cell from the pack, maybe i didnt use the correct solder rod, and i don't know the wattage of the solder either (its an old one.). i guess i'll just use hack saw or dremel and cut the battery connector.

another question, can i use banana plug type connector used in electrical connections? i found pack of 6 in a electrical store and thought its similar to ones used by car racers. has anyone tried it>? is it better than tamiya bullet connector?

You'll have to solve your soldering problem before you can re-build a pack. If you cut a cell off one pack, how will you ever connect it to the other 6-cell pack? You want to use a 40W minimum soldering iron with a wedge or chisel tip. A soldering gun or a small round tip won't do it.

I can't comment on the "banana" connectors you found without more details - all banana plugs are used in electrical conections. Some of these are of poor quality and will cause a lot of problems. If you want to do it right get some Deans connectors from an on-line R/C car or boat vendor. For low wattage use the Tamiya connectors work, but they are far from ideal.

these are the pics of my battery and the connector i use. i bought this battery used from a car guy. i havent bought deans yet, but i will.

the bars that connect batteries is the one i meant to cut, and then solder wire to connect it to the pack.

thanks!!
