This is my mock up engine for my Coral Reef Hydro. This the only hydro to run this German engine. Sorry the crew could never get it to run to it's full potential. This is for a 1/10 scale project.

Propper painting prep for Wood Hull??

Hello Darin. I have been in the painting business for over forty years. The types of paints have changed over the years. Some for the good and some just bad. Over the years I have used all the major brands and them some. At this time I perfer PPG producs. I first must say that every thing I paint is sprayed. So if you are using another mothod please disregard this information. I have painted many wood items with auto body paint. From fly rods to hot rods. The paints that I use are all two part. You have your base primers and a hardner. The primers are very durable. If you are painting a wooden hull I would first sand as smoth as possible. Then prime all areas inside and out. These products will withstand all fuels. If you have small defects use a two part filler. Sand and spray on more primer. The main thing is to not over prime. If all the wood grain is filled in and smoth you are there. Always have a good grease and oil remover and wipe and dry with a lint free cloth. also you need a good tack rag. You are now ready to paint the color. I don't recomened the old stye nitro lacquers or enamels. I use all base coat and clears. The beauty of this prosses is that you shot on your base color. Than do a light coat of clear. This way you can see if you have an area that is not good to go. If all looks good now you can put all your decals in place. and the clear over them. for small jobs like your boat. I use PPG DC 3000 fast clear. This works well if your spraying in the shop. Let dry a day or so then sand and buff.

Who is the go to person for scale decals now??

I just had Wesley's make a custom set of decals for the late Coral Reef. I sent him a photo and he made the decals to scale. They are outstanding. I'm very pleased with his service.

    New old guy.

1951_Chevy.pdf Hello all. I'm a new old guy. This is my first blog. I restore and build street rods. As a ut I loved to build model boats nad planes. I know have a grandson that likes to do the same. I have an old Dumas 36in hydro we are putting together. Much fun so far.

Old Dumas 36in shovel nose hydro

For just fun running im not sure if the 6.5 K&B engine might not be a handful for that boat...Its not that its a bad motor, but they are a little high strung...if you could find a K&B 40 sport marine engine you would find it to be a little more tame and easier to start and run (little grandkids dont have alot of patience...ive got 5 of em!) A straight shaft is old school but would work...you really have to line up things right! do you have the ball and socket for the u joint? Have you actually started to build the boat yet? Are you using epoxy? Back in the day I knew guys who used Ambroid model airplane cement and wondered why thier boat fell apart as soon as they fired it up!! Thank you Bill for the responce. First of all I am old school. But I can learn. The engine has a ball and socket u joint that came with the engine. I have the haul built. all joints a done with an auto body epoxy. I have not installed the decking. I did replace the sponsons with aluminum. I have not ran the engine yet. I'm still working on the servo locations. I have the rudder servo done. I'm still trying to design the throttle servo.
  13. I have and old Dumas shovel nose hydro I Purchased years ago. My nine year old grandson asked me if we could build it and run it with radio control. In my day our little club had Miss Thriftway's,Slow Motion's, and Miss Bardhl's. All had .049 nitro engines. We ran them around a duck pond on a string. So far the project is going fine. So this is what I have done so far. I have a 2 chanel Traxxas radio with 2 servos. I have a marine K&B 6.5 cc Nitro engine. The prop is a two blade Octura X447 on a strait 3/16 shaft. The rudder is 4"x3/4" with water pick up. I've tryed to keep the center of gravity close to the boat center!!! With all the radio equipment and not up to date with these new developments I'm kind of in the dark. any of your comments would be appriciated. Old Guy
