I need to figure out which way this part goes. When I took it apart I was not careful to see which way this part went. The grooves go in the piston pin

Thanks

It should be opening on the way up and closing on the way down. Also you can see the wear on the side that's been used.

Or are you referring to the the orientation of the housing itself? If so the carb opening goes up.

I'm only reffering to the rotating part. It's my first time taking apart and engine and i did not pay attention to that part.

Oh ok. The slot with OPS stamped next to it is the one to use. If you ever question it just refer to what I said above about when the window should open and close.

Simple trick is when you look thru the opening, you should not see the rod right in the center. If you do, you are out 180*. Use other slot.

In looking at your picture of the crankcase, is the rotor engagement pin in the end of the crank worn down? I don't see anything sticking out.
Also, not sure if you have had the piston/rod and sleeve out? But if my memory serves me correctly, there should be an oil hole at the 12 o'clock position of the rod. if so, that hole should be on the intake side

Rick- The engagement pin is a pin worn but there doesn't seem to be a problem, it looks like there is enough meat there to do its job.

Gary and Terry- The motor was running fine before the winter and I did oil it for storage. I would like to recondition it as its a spare engine but like I have mentioned above, I've never done it and I'm quite scared to break it or not be able to put it back together. I have a spare set of bearing I believe. for the piston and sleeve, I have no idea how to get it out. Same for the belt part (brass flywheel I think) I don't know how to take it off.

Popcylcle stick in the exhaust port and rotate the crank to bump it up to grab it. If it's sticky you may need a little heat or soak in a degreaser first . you can use a small 2 or 3 jaw puller on the flywheel.
