JAE 67/84 build up

I got the tank today. It holds 26oz.
Little over kill for this eng but better to much than to little.
I can place it forward or back to help tune the ride of the boat.
Also went with simple servo mounts this time. Just two blocks of Bass wood for a mount.
Stu sent me the supper needle and made my own mount for it.
Not much left in the tub to do just drill the holes for the push rod set up.
Then time to do the epoxy work when the Carbon/Kevlar cloth comes in this week I hope.
I is right at 4 lbs like this. Will see if I can keep it under 7 lbs.

Now we going to have some fun...................Carbon / Kevlar 2.2 oz .006 thick.
Will do the tub sides and the sides of the sponsons.
Will see how much weight it adds then go from there.

Ok got the first side of the tub under the press.
Waxed the glass this time instead of using wax paper.
The paper left a flat finish on the epoxy last time.
Hope the glass leaves a nicer finish.......hell hope it pops off....LOL
UPS dropped off a some go juice to day also.

How do you plan to finish the edges of the Kevlar? I never had any luck being able to get rid of the fuzzy edge.

I trim it this morning and used a razor knife. Found out about the frizzing when I did a little sanding in one spot.
Will work on it tonight and see if I can come up with a solution.

Unfortunately, sanding Kevlar is not an option. It won't fully absorb the resin and won't allow a good edge. The razor knife is probably as good as you'll get. I have spent hours and hours trying to figure it out. I gave up at 1000 grit.

found the solution......Kevlar melts......hit it with the torch and it cleans it right up........kinda like a nylon rope you have to hit the end with a torch or it will end up a mess.

you know I was thinking Kevlar is nothing but a high strength polymer.
I bet it will melt like all the other ones.
Took the torch to some and it balled right up on fire.
Left a hard melted edge you can sand.
Will try a soldering iron to control the heat better next.

Nice. Learn something every day. I wish I could get back the parts that I threw out. All Kevlar ever did for me was piss me off. Never thought to burn it. I'm glad you figured it out. When I saw that you were using the Kevlar, I thought "**** it, that's a bummer". Nice save.

Have you thought of cutting the kevlar (with either a very sharp knife or sierra sharp scissors) 1/4 of an inch smaller than the finished part and laying up the edges in glass. That way you get the strength caracteristics of kevlar with the sandability of glass at the edges.( sierra sharp scissors have serrations on the edge of the fixed blade that hold the kevlar fibres still while cutting . They are the only scissors that I have found that cut kevlar (somewhere near to) satisfactorily.I use carbon fibre mostly, and only use kevlar on the hatch covers so as to not interfere with radio signals when using a GPS.

I did this and it works like a gem, cuts the cloth like butter and clean.

My latest SAW tub has CF over S glass, hoping it's "tougher" than straight carbon. Kevlar wudda worked too but I just can't work with that chit.

Broke the last two tubs in a tumble, hope this one survives...
