JD Builds a BOAT

Four years ago I started racing 1/10 Scale Hydroplane with the Electric R/C Unlimited club out here in Washington. I began by racing the 1957 Hawaii Kai III belonging to another retired school teacher who loved the full size and model unlimiteds, but wasn't a racer. The Kai was built about 15 years ago by Roger "Czar" Newton and races in the Vintage Class.

Last year while reading the book "What Were They Thinking" which describes a whole bunch of full size unlimited hydroplanes that were "out of the box" in concept/design compared to more traditional designs, I came across the 1985 Tempus Tunnel build by Chuck Hinkling. I thought, "I build tunnel boats, I should build a 1/10 scale version of the Tempus to race in Modern Class. The full size Tempus was only 28' long and I could only make the model 1" to comply with the ERCU build guidelines. After some tinkering around with the sponsons, I got the Tempus to run fairly decently. Only problem was at 29" the boat was at a disadvantage in race traffic and choppy water conditions.

So, I checked the ERCU Master Hull list and no one had registered the U-100 BOAT. Why build the BOAT? It is all white, no decals. A ML Boatworks 8255 frame kit was order and construction has begun. The 8255 frame kit is definitely a kit for a model builder with experience building model boats. Yes, JD can build with materials other than foam covered with plywood.

If anyone has a photo of the BOAT, I would appreciate either having a copy sent to me or posting it on this build thread.

Having cut many frames for model boats dating back to building balsa wood .049 powered free running hydroplanes back in the mid '50, I am impressed with the laser cutting on the ML Boatworks kits. Because the frames are 1/16" plywood, it is necessary to ad gluing strips to the frames. I used 1/4" balsa wood to create the gluing strips. The balsa wood is easily beveled to the sponson the frames to create the gluing surface. Making the various sponson sheeting pieces does require a considerable amount of time.

I used to design the boat, then print off the formers on A4 paper and glue the paper to 3 or 4mm balsa...then the 'fun' began of cutting out all the shapes with an exacto knife...including where all the spruce stringers went though....

We have a very competitive group of 8255 hull 1/10 scale boats in our club. I think one is an ML wood hull. It's one of my favorite classes.

I managed to get the motor, flex shaft tube, and rudder assembly installed. I enjoy making the motor mount for electric boats. The mount is 1/8" plywood. I established a prop shaft angle for the motor, lined up the flex shaft and tube to the coupler, and filled the gap in the bottom sheeting with JB Kwick. I still need to install the 6-32 t-nuts inside the left sponson for mounting the turn fin bracket.

Today I made the turn fin bracket from L shaped aluminum, installed the T-nuts to mount the bracket to the back left sponson former, and sealed the interior of the hull with West Systems. I also included a picture of the back of the motor mount.
