Are you tunnel heads racing these engines running them wet, or dry? Factory or aftermarket carb? Is the SPP pipe the pull away from the pack favorite?

zoom/orlic/KRE 11mm carby
SPP all the way (90mm straight line from center of plug to inside radius of pipe (looking down onto motor from top) good starting point.
reduced water flow for sure! (i use zip tie (x2) on the tube going into head from pickup) probably better to reduce on way out though.

1450 good baseline prop, but LOTS of grunt in these motors!

I run water to the head, stock Carb with a little modification, pipe short, SPP quiet pipe is the ticket, and run a 1915-19-38. Beast of a prop. Good luck finding a boat that can handle the power once you get it dialed in.

seems like Dialed in would be hull to power.. if you overpower it......... then well...

The end game is winning races....

Testing other carbs, ran an Orlic .470 and far too big. Went back to the stock carb with the low end removed. Orlic .450 and Zoom both seem to be mean carbs but we don’t have any of them.
1450 that’s been tweaked, but playing with the new ABC’s. 18 and 19 series.
Carbon pipe. Next closest is an Irwin Stamped fat pipe. The small volume stamped might be quick but limited testing showed the SPP to be best overall.
61 straight line, never got a chance to lay down good oval laps. Fastest we had was 26.8.

My Orlic carb is a .470, It can stay on the DD.
I guess if my M-18 Dragon won’t be able to handle the overwhelming power of a Zoom carbed,SPP piped Novarossi 46 spinning a variety of Octura, and ABC props, I’ll have to power it with the Nelson I won numerous heats with on my Warhead and Vision hulls before I sold them... if it ever quits snowing, and the ice goes off the lakes.

Most of the time Mike, but not always. Sometimes you just want to see how fast you can go. Dialed in meaning finding the right motor/prop/pipe/ combo for the motor. Hull aside.

Larry, I have been through many hulls in the past 6 months, the quest continues. Rigging up a new Hellion right now, as well as a PTI NX400.

Good point.. so in saying this.. for me.. it is (or was) winning races. I dont personally care how fast (MPH) the boat is. Time however is a different deal.

and you know the challenges in lower lap times.. a ton of crap as to align.. LOL

Would be fun to play with one of those setups. I dont run D tunnel typically so its a neither here nore there for me.. they are however fun to run and watch when they are really on! We dont see them all that much in our district.. at least in my time doing this. I do understand there was a nice following back in the mid 80s to mid 90s. (IMPBA Dist 4)

Maybe i should give it a go again.. might be fun

Ha, anytime we gained a couple miles an hour the magic setup we had disappeared also. By the time you get it wrangled in daylight disappears it seems like. Lol

Mike,
If we count Greg, who really lives over in your neck of the woods, there are at least 6 D tunnels racing at TCMBC,if we all show for a race. Your K&B powered Rinker replica was no slouch.
James,
I’m curious to find out how those Hellion’s do racing. I’m confident that my Dragon will up to the task when I get it dialed in. I have a fleet of outriggers to run if all I want to do is squeeze the trigger and go fast, I’m hooked on racing tunnels because to win you have to out drive the conditions on the course, and the other drivers.

You know that all I used to run were the .21 sized tunnels, but once I got started on the bigger ones, I have never looked back. The 7.5cc and 11cc tunnels are so much more fun in my opinion. I dont even run a .21 size boat any more. Just my personal preference, and there are quite a few D and E tunnels around here so that helps.

I think if you got ahold of a NR.46 or .67 OB engine on a big tunnel, it would re ignite that spark I remember you having back in the day with the 3.5 tunnels!

Mike,
I’m hooked on racing tunnels because to win you have to out drive the conditions on the course, and the other drivers.

Thats the only reason ive raced tunnels almost exclusively for the past 20 years.

My comment about "good luck finding a boat to handle it" was in reference to the power that is currently available with the Nova engines. You will ALWAYS have to have the perfect setup on a tunnel and be a great driver to win, no engine or hull will alone change that. Its just that everyone now has the opportunity to go as fast as only a very small few were able to go back in the day with limited power resources.

I’ve only been racing boats since 2006, I’ve been either lucky or cursed that none of my piped outboards has ever been lacking in power or speed. Being able to have one of the fastest if not the fastest boat in the race, was much easier for me to achieve than finishing 6 laps for a podium finish. It took me a long while to learn how to not beat myself in a heat by not finishing. And sometimes I still let my Adrenalin drive the boat to 25 point heat.

Larry,

I raced the boat 8 times and it got wacked 9.. (LOL).. cripes.. every time I would race it it would get wacked.. the last hit removed the deck from the hull.. so.. its on the wall. I fixed it 5 times!.. then said.. TAPE PLEASE!..

The hits (EVERY ONE OF THEM) happen on turn 2.. somebody would come inside the boat with too much speed..... M U S T P A S S........... and WACK!.. LOL... O well..

Good times!

Will be interesting to see how some M18's go next month with both 67 and 46 power...might have to make a glass version to keep up to demand lol

the Hellion should be a sweet boat for sure!

While the Vision is good, it is certainly not a NR46 tamer...

30FE445B-F975-43EE-B523-505BA7DCCD12.jpeg My 46 outboard showed up today, NR changed the carb and the case again. My rear exhaust is from the first batch Glenn had for sale and has the small head button and only 1 rib on each side of the case along the small bearing end and 1 rib along the bottom. My DD crankcase has additional material and different ribs, and a head button that encompasses the head bolts like the 21 engines, and a larger guide screw for the carb barrel. My shiny new outboard, has additional case ribbing to the other two engines the larger head button, and the carb has a much larger body.
