I ended up cutting back the angled part of the rear of the sponson to make a flat spot in the right area. I put on an aluminum backing plate inside the sponson to spread the forces around.

Seems that the consensus is to mount it further outboard. I'll work on that. I need to re-watch that video Scott did about turn fins as well.
