The frame kits mike has fit together very nice. Unless you absolutely feel the need to do it all by hand.

I would just get the paint sheet.

I would recommend getting a set of plans. I ordered a ML boat kit 1/8 Lincoln Thrift and it was way off. The air trap was not even close for starters. Unfortunately I had already started gluing and assembling on the jig before I got the plans. So needless to say it came off the jig and found its way to the garbage can. ML boat kits are great, but it wasn't what I needed for a Scale hydro. So i got some wood and cut out from a set of plans.

Brad maybe for you and others the bottom of the boat doesn’t have to be “scale”, but in my case it has to have Scale appearance so if th bow block is incorrect and a short air trap it throws off the look I’m wanting and how I want my boat to perform. Everyone does their builds differently and are successful.

Grayson ML kits are great, just my opinion to get a set of plans to compare and help, with the build..

Sorry to hear you were disappointed that much to throw the kit away. The air traps are removed on the 108 and 109 as they have proven to perform excellent without them. Some of the best running scales our there right now, and consistently winning scales are coming from the 108 and 109 kits. I think throwing the kit away was really extreme. I am not sure we talked about the issues you had, but adding air traps back should have been a very easy task, and adjusting the bow block I would think is another easier addition vs starting over from scratch. Anyways, sorry to hear about the trouble I have caused you.

And Hydro Junkie, I am sure your PM is to start talking like normal...

Actually, it wasn't about you or your kits. You know my thoughts on the subject, as do many in the forum, so I don't see the need to bring it up again. By the way, PM means PRIVATE MESSAGE and that means what I did or didn't say IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS

Mark, you posting on this thread you sent a PM, it sure does look like you want us to know. Hell just send the PM. Its real easy to the see the red flag in the corner.

Just want to say that I have built several boats from ML Boatworks kits. They are of exceptional quality and Mike provides a great service to our hobby. I have also used several Newton plan sets and everyone knows that these plans have provided dimensional accuracy for scale hydro racers for many years. Using the Newton plans in combination with a ML kit and cowlings from the RC Boat company is basically all anyone needs to build a replica of just about any unlimited hydroplane that ever raced. I recommend using all of these resources to not only achieve scale results but also to facilitate a quality and enjoyable building process.Hats off to those who do so much for our hobby.

At no point in my post did I say anything BAD about ML kits I SAID THEY ARE GREAT!!! and that kit was not what I wanted for my build.

I pm'd Mike L and asked him to contact me at his convenience so I could discuss with him my issue. the reason if you all must know why I thrown it away was it was modified in away that it was easier to toss start over and cut out a new one the way I wanted..

the plans are nice to have to change running surfaces, airtraps, afterplane, hull depth.....blah blah blah (redrawing altered parts using original parts as a referende), if you have the plans to guide the overall shape of the boat

never would have thought to start PM's in a public thread.....lolWTFhahah

And here I was, thinking this thread had basically died.

That said, kits and plans can only take you so far. I know that, truth be told, plan set 108 doesn't really make more than a stand off scale 73 Pak. For those that say "It's close enough" and they're happy with it, that's great.

Same thing goes for the plans I got from Roger to built the 2007 Madison hull. The plans are actually for the Bud T-5 so they don't make a true 0706 either. Those that think they do didn't really do their research as there are actually several very obvious differences between the two hulls.

In my case, since I pretty much rework every boat I build to make it more accurate when comparing it to the full sized hull, buying a kit would mean I'm paying for material twice as any part I rework will have to be replaced, as well as any parts that are made to fit to the changed area of the first part. As I see it, it's far cheaper, for me anyway, to spend my money on plans and tracing paper than on a kit that, I know going in, I'm not going to use all of anyway.

Good to see your passionate love for all you say but I’m sure nobody cares for museum details actually, just a reliable good running race boat is what is all about .

Wayne, who said anything about museum details? Hell, even with me having access to the full sized Pak, I know it's not all original. I know for a fact these aspects are different from when it was originally built:

1) the dash has been reworked a number of times so there is no way to say that the layout that's presently there is accurate to the boats present depiction. The instrument panel also is the wrong color

2) the orange used to paint the striping is not correct, it was darkened to the shade Mike Hanson wanted even though he had access to the original color on the trailer

3) the right sponson is an "experimental" fiberglass molding that was installed by Ron Jones after the sponson was seriously damaged in the early 80s. It is actually 4" wider and shaped different than the original

4) while the tails are still the same in location, shape and height, they are configured incorrectly due to changes made while the boat was in Madison

As for the Madison, there are areas on shown on the plans that are not shaped anywhere close to what the boat actually has. I found this using a tape measure and an angle gauge in around 2 minutes.

My point is, if you're going to build a scale boat, build a boat that APPEARS TO BE SCALE, not a sport 60 with a scale like paint job and claim it's a scale boat. If that means changing plans or modding a kit, so be it. It can still be a good running and reliable boat

Again who cares about a lighter shade or darker shade or the pay n pak or the Maddison etc etc being correct or incorrect, standoff looks like not is like , it’s a bloody model , get over it already , buy plans make it your own , buy a kit put together its as simple as that yes.

Mark you're beating a dead horse, let it go. You know as well as I do that most of us here in the NW take SCALE to a different level than some others do. The fact that we can go and still look at these museum boats and go to the shops of current running boats is a huge advantage to us when it comes to getting dimensions off boats for our builds. When Mike L made the comment earlier in this discussion that he had removed the air trap in the 108,109 hulls because it performed excellent without them, well that is his opinion and I would have not purchased the kit, because it was not what I wanted and did not match up even close to the Newton plans I have. So yes I was bummed when a kit states to be off Newton plans and it wasn't. So lesson learned what works for someone will not work for everyone. Don't get me wrong ML boat kits are good, just wasn't what I wanted for my 1/8 scale build. I currently have a ML kit 7474 1/6.Gas hull I'm rebuilding to run again.
