So I recently converted all my boats over to Life battery packs and Radio to Lipo battery packs, I am new to both of these coming from Nicad battery packs. I have a few questions I need answered, what is the best way to store these batteries when not in use? Can I leave the batteries in my garage during cold winter months? and do they need any charge or storage instructions for being stored for the long winter months while I cant race a boat? Any help or any suggestions would be greatly apppreciated

Thanks Beau

Do not freeze them, nor total discharge, oh and do not cook them! Other then over charging them you can pretty much get away with anything on them. I do recommend they be stored with about 60-70% of the charge.

On Lipo batteries I have heard different suggestions on the level of charge to store them. I like keeping them around 40% through the winter or summer. It might be smart to check any type of battery every month or two to make sure they have not self discharged.

Last question, should I keep them in my house at a warm 70 degress or would it hurt to leave them in the garage, my garage is heated but to only 40-50 degrees when not in use?

Thanks Beau

Hi Beau,

I store all mine in millitary ammo cans 50 cal and SAW Gun and store them in the garage. Some experts say storing a refrigerator will extend the life. I've also known some who have stored in a freeze for more than a year. I have used the A123 and life cells for about 10 years, the best advise I can give is buy a good charger, for my boat stuff I use the Hitec X1 and a small A123 field charger. The A123 cells are good for a 1000 cycles. Try to charge often but more important is to not bottom the pack out. Most smart chargers have a low voltage sensor and won't charge a pack that is too low. Don't throw them away but find some airplane or heli guys in your area and they will tell/show you how to bring the pack back to level. Or pm me.

Thanks, John

John,

Thanks for all the info much appreciated, If I need help I know where to go for it.

I agree with John store and charge them in a metal box and always stay near them while charging and use the correct charging mode/programm. Never leave them unattended. Also make the box not to air tight.

Here is my setup:

A friend of mine find out the hard way (and wasn't charging them in a metal box):

Also have a look at these youtube movies:
