Squaring Flex Shafts?

What's involved in squaring your own flex shaft? Do people use a die with a press? If so, is a 20 ton shop press enough and does someone sell dies? Thanks for any info on the subject!

I need to square a standard flex shaft assembly because I can not use a flex ferrule setup.

If squaring is a difficult process, where can I buy cable assemblies cut to a specific length squared?

I've heard it takes at least a 60 ton hydraulic arbor press. I made my own dies from 4142 pre hardened ordinance steel. I will try them out on Wed. I'll let you how it goes. I can tell that a 25 ton doesn't work.

I have a 60 ton press and it take just about all of it to do a 1/4 inch shaft. 3/16 shaft around 30 tons

Good info. Thanks guys! All I have is a 20 ton press, so I will pay someone to do it.

No, I think those are designed to be used with a flex ferrule.

I can square .150 .187 and .250 cable...I sell square collets and square ferrules...double square is the only way to go...

Thanks Bob!

I won't be able to use a ferrule on my Envy rigger. Ferrules are too bulky for the Ski/Z-strut setup that I'm using. But, I will be sending you a .250" standard cable assembly to square in the near future. I'll send you a PM when I have it ready to send. Thanks!

No problem...nothing bulky about that trim aluminum ferrule for .150 cable tho...I would be glad to help you any way I can....just give me a shout.

Bob,

Are you using "standard" speedmaster type struts that have been bored out for bushings?

I still trying to figure out how the strut set up works.

What is your stub shaft riding in? Bushings? Ball Bearings? Nothing?

Brass bushing, and I use a use a collet with a set screw up by motor to stop shaft from sliding out when you get off the throttle. Has never let me down. I use a oiler for lubricating and leave shaft in all season

Buck, just a standard strut with lead Teflon bushings...stub shaft set screws to the squared ferrule...square cable then slides for and aft an1/8" or so. Cable is locked between collet and ferrule. Reduces the force on the bearings of the engine, and if the cable breaks you don't lose everything. The system works awesome...
