As I am new to rigers I am getting ready to mount all my hardware and set up everything. I would like to know about how deep the rudder should be below the tub. I would also like to know where to get a motor mount. I am going to run a MAC 45 and the inside of the tub is 3 7/8 inches wide. Thanks for all the help in advance.

Bob... I custom made mine with the isolaters and aluminum bar tapped for the motor, also built the same with delrin rails, the tub, at least my two, didnt adapt to a "factory" available mount...... the rudders I'll measure for you tom. Barney made me a sweet pair of tanks for the pair, he should have the pattern down...... I like them, they're as stable as a rr, easy to build, fairly fast, ( testing proto builds).... Find a nice 1457 tricked out, and go....... good luck.... Mike

I guess I will try to build a mount for the engine. I also had Walt build me a SS tank that fits great. I also have Speed Master hardware and a Dave Preusse turn fin with one of Don's needle assemblys.

Thanks again

Bob

Bob... yeah, like he did.... anyway the rudder #'s were 2 3/4 " ( cut) and 3 3/4" on the two boats..... no difference on the shorter, to the longer, yet.... I've got a Tyndall fin on one, and a Pruesse fin on the other no differenence shown there either so far.... set my boats per plan to the letter, strut, AOA, etc.... great right off the beach.... I've shimmed the front on one slowly to get some air, they seem to run stuck a little...... with the mac, you should have an instant competetive boat...... good luck..... mike

Mike,

The reason the tub didn't accomodate an off the shelf mount is because I had tom widen the tub slightly to accept a little more fuel capacity - the Mac's etc need a lot of fuel and the original design would have been too small for these engines.

Have you tried a 1655 or 1657 on them yet?

Tim.

Tim, I can understand the move on the tub thinking about it, just threw me a loop when pre build was in the works....... I'm not an accomplished builder, had Marty's help, and his shop, and I turned out a couple nice boats! My old school piccos are lackin' the HP to turn the 16's I think, ( an over pitched '57 is the limit, to this point) I'm tweakin here and there slowly on it, shimmin' and the strut. While it's not my RR/cmb....... it goes fast and comes back..... I'd definitely like to air it out a little, having not seen a twitch offa the water( like nice for racing) still, it's glued down and I'm fine tuning it as I go...... course, the picco' gotta hold toghether, too...... thanks for throwin some help to me, tho' Bob's mac should have some grunt, and he'll be impressed........ mike

I'd dare say a 1655 should work and would free the boat up some too. The tops of the front and rear sponsons should be set to parrallel to the running surface like this, and that should give a reasonably good heat race set-up without being too sticky.

I've got a Picco 45EXR blackhead going in mine.

holy cow... i'm actually glad to hear that as i was more worried they would be too light. I guess the tub nose shape change worked. B)

Tim... the pic didnt work, possibly for me.... if I could figure compukers, Id have an avatar thing and fill in my address.... the old lady is busy, etc...... interested in the pic, though...... I've old school silverheads in mine, while modded, I need some more HP, I think..... the 16' may be in the future, Joe K sent me an H 18 that was nice, but untested yet....... the blackhead you have will definitely pay dividends.... I've gone little more than "set up per plans" besides minute strut, and shim adjustments on the front boom...... trying to take it to kite and back down, slowly, setting up as I go. I'm on the extreme edge with motor and pipe, for sure, and while the boat is monster stable, and reliable, I'd like to see an achievement in speed to help on the competition aspect of it.... speeds in 45 hydro are 65 to 75 around here, and my boats are slow in comparison.... ( fastest boat dont... blah) I like to throw in, and hang on! A modded RS would be the wish, if I was even able..... someday....... do you use a digital protractor, as I could possibly relate your angles to mine, from the pics? I'm currently using the "board" and measuring each change, etc. If, there's a drastic difference in angles, I can adapt quickly. The per plans set up measurements were spot on for the start, and for a non existent builder I almost fell over it ran so well....... a gasser may be next..........

Tom, the plans were great.... Marty and I did reinforce stress areas with triangle stock, ( bulkheads, stuffing tube, booms) possibly adding nominal weight vs structure, but, you know........ The testing continues at a slow pace, but, I'm gaining every time, I built it, and its mine..... thanks Mike

Mike,

This Pic is of Darren Laurie's FF45. It's the sister boat to mine and Tom M's.

His has been set-up so that the tops of the sponsons are at zero degrees. I've seen his run and it's not too wet for a heat racer, and handles choppy water very well. Keeps a 1655 hooked up nicely!

I do use a digital meter but my boat is not ready to get wet yet. Still a few months off I'd say - I'm a slow builder!

I can't remember exactly but I think fronts are 3.6 degrees and the rears to 1.5 when the sponson tops are at zero. Tom M should be able to confirm this.

Tim... thanks for the info.... I got my set up board back from borrowed, and plan on the angle check today...... my boat (s) were set up by measuring on the board per Tom. Marty made wood blocks at height to set the rear, center, of the tubs...... first runs were outta site for scratch built, but, the hunt is on...... if, I remember, my motor wouldnt pull the 1.6 series, although, I hadnt tried looking at modified '16's ..... possibly suffering from TPS... tired picco syndrome, I'm pushing things to the limit with a Marty Davis '57 duplicator prop I got from John Knight............ works.... high 50's possible 60..... slow by todays heat racing standards, but, it'll handle chop, for sure, and I can bring it back........ He made his cowl like we did too, used an airplane lexan canopy, and a piece of ply..... trick.....

Tom, are you testing a build, too?.... Two guys in my group are doing phenomenal with your .21 kit....... thanks..... Mike
