What are the purpose of these and could they be utilized on tunnels?

What exactly are these cut outs called? Steps?

What is their purpose and could they be used on a tunnel?

I’ve got a tunnel with steps on it, not sure of the make but think it might be H&M

I believe the 7.5-11 class HTB tunnels use a single step(s). Most catamarans also use them - as your pic shows. They are used to break the water tension on the bottom riding surfaces so the boat can run more freely, faster and better handling if set up right. They are not allowed on monos in sanctioned racing.
 
Lets ask the proper question, has anyone done proper testing to see if they are of benefit or not?

The lynx has a 'step' in the non-trip which is using a similar principal IMO, that boat works well.
