My orange and black SG came to me equipped with a parabolic piped MAC 45. While I was waiting on parts to freshen that engine up I raced the boat with a AA 45 and an Orlic massaged Picco 45. I built a older SGX kit a few years back and never got around to rigging it up and getting it wet. The MAC is back in the SG and the AA went to a fellow club member for his JAE, so my my choice of engines that I have available in my stash are the Orlic Picco, a CMB VAC45, a Novarossi 180 exhaust 46 and a Novarossi DD46.

If faced with a similar dilemma which would you choose?

Elias,

I had been hesitant to go that route after witnessing several early DD have serious mechanical issues. Glenn Quarels informed me that those issues were resolved when he was still the Novarossi distributor. My DD has the revised internals.

46 wrap around. Why spin an extra set of bearings?

As the epoxy cures... I’ve been out in the shop most of the morning working on my M-18 Dragon build. I pulled the SGX down off the shelf and have it on the bench. When I originally started this project my Orlic Picco was the intended power plant. It fit right in my SG and was very competitive with the local D hydros. With the wider boom spacing on the SGX the rear tube had to be notched out to clear the carb. Not a big deal really, but I had second thoughts about it. The VAC 45 would require an even larger notch be cut for carb clearance, so it will go back in my Sport 40. Novarossi for the win. I have cowls to fit both styles of exhaust too.

keep us posted on how you like the N/R in the sport 40.

Stu,

What changes were made to the VAC 45 to make it a V.5? Mine is a 2014 engine with a Scott Bouchie balanced crank and billet piston. It run very well in my Sport 40.

Watch that coupler on the wrap around header, a constant weak/failure point, many use silicone tape over it to help keep it from failing Thanks John
Are they blowing couplers even with the pipe telescoped over the header?
Yup!
Good to know. Thanks.

Never burned a coupler on my 45 hydro's. Many other people had good finishes with CMBs besides Stu!! I placed 5 th overall with my 45 CMB powered hydro. If you want performance tips Stu seems to be more than happy to chat on the phone!!!
