Anyone still awake out there, have a difficult big bearing in my K67 that won't come out after heating the case in the oven, need suggestions and or is there a tool out there that can aid in knocking the bugger out?

Hi Greg,

For bearing removal I find that using a propane torch works better. It heats the case faster than the bearing and the bearings fall out when hit on a block of wood. By heating in an oven the whole case and bearings come up to temperature at the same time so the expansion differential isn't as much so it make bearing removal harder. For new bearing install the oven works fine.

Thanks, John

I have built wooden sleeves to install the outer bearing and a couple stands to set the inner bearing on then taking a hammer to the whole setup to tap the bearings into place at the same time. It keeps everything straight in most applications when installing new bearings.

A hammer has no reason to be in the same room as a ball bearing as hammers have been known to leave UNWANTED MATERIAL MOVEMENT IN BOTH RACES & BALLS!!!!! Greg L. Settle

I can say that I have used the hammer as a light way of putting the new bearings in place on as many as 30 to 40 nitro and gas motors without any problems damaging bearings. Then I look the bearings over to make sure they are clean and uniform.

Check out the Huddy bearing tools from A Main Hobbies as well. They have extraction and install combo tools for .12 - .21 car engines and work great. I only warm the case with a hair dryer for removal and install. They are very similar to Jim's in design.

Thanks, John

I forgot to include that NR bearing tools are available from Glenn as well. I have their bearing insert tool for the .21 & .46 and they work great. They also sell a extraction and insert tool combo as well.

Thanks, John

Jim Wilson's tools were all stainless steel and for larger engines, they are somewhat engine size & brand specific. I made my own for the CMB.80HR's and CMB.91vac's and not sure if they are available form anywhere else.

Thanks, John

No Allen, I eventually got it out, I think when the bearing ate it's pigs the outer race got tweaked in the process and made it stick more than usual, going to real interested in seeing Jim's tools and how they work especially the bearing removal tool, those would have been really helpful in this case, I've never seen such before. Looks like I'm going need to spend some dough on another tool, just need to find one that does all engines. See you down there Allan, I'm heading out Tuesday afternoon.
