Need some opinions on what HV ESC to get. I am wanting to build a 10s boat just to play with. More than likely it will be an 1/8 scale since I lay up my own boats. I really don't want an ESC that brakes the bank, if you know what I mean.

I have seen these and are they any good?

Buddy,

There really is no clear choice for an HV ESC. The two you listed are possibilities. The other two options are the Swordfish line of ESC's and the Hobbyking YEP 180HV.

You must be very cautious about not going over the current rating with the HV controllers. Unlike the 6S and lower controllers which can be pushed beyond their stickered current rating, the HV controllers have minimal overhead.

A very nice high end controller is the MGM line of controllers. https://www.rocketcityracing.net/product/mgm-tmm-25063-3-for-race-boats-x2-series-speed-control/

The MGM's are about twice as much as most other controllers and some caution that these really work best with some motors and not others.

Do you already have a motor selected? Controller choice will depend highly on which motor you select.

Honestly, I would not start out with a FE 1/8 scale if you are not familiar electric boats . Bigger boats with HV systems don't work well with budget systems.

Just my 2 cents,

Tyler is right on in my opinion.

I didn't know IW was here when I first tried FE. So I tried different combinations not knowing the right setup and now I have a box of burned out speed controls, ruined batteries and smoked motors.

Its hard to believe the amount of current a 10S battery throws out, you really need to set it up right. The wrong setup can fry a speed control in micro seconds and its useless.

I understand you are trying to do this on a budget, but I believe you'll save money in the long run if you find a P-Limited setup (its the best bang for the buck) to start and get used to FE.

Then go to your 1/8th scale. AND LISTEN to these guys. There are some of the fastest boaters in the country here and they know their @hit.

I know it may seem a bit more expensive than you were looking for but I'll be glad to send you some pictures of my box of burned out parts to help you through that

I can also tell you as a 45 year nitro racer, once an FE is set up right, all you end up doing when you go to the lake is turn it on and drive (charge it of course)

Sorry for rambling, just trying to keep a fellow boater from making the same mistakes I made

Thanks guys.

I have a P limited tunnel and I also have an Aerotech 45 tunnel with a TP 4060 motor attached to a K&B lower that is setup for 5s. I just thought since I lay up my own scales, I would try one of those too with the 5s batteries hooked up in series. Things have changed now, I just bought the molds for a very good running Sport 20 so I'll probably be doing one of those with 4s batteries.

I bought the molds from Dean Werges. Phil Thomas always called it "Brand X" but Dean called it "Extreme" . It looks similar to an AC sport 40 only smaller. Kenny Hildreth has a couple of them so does Wes Elliot. They run very good and as soon as I get my vacuum bagging equipment I plan on making a few.

Buddy Benedict, both of those ESC'S will work for you. Also check out the ZTW that Bill sells @ Rattlesnake RC . We have guys running the HW, Turnigy, Swordfish and ZTW on 8S with no issues in our club. Theses esc's are all capable of 10S just becareful not to go to big on the prop.

I have burnt a lot of ESCs from 120-200As, my experiences are to use 200A or above ESC for anything more than 8S, and use the right prop.
