Japanese carp
Hey do they sell those at the local fish store. LOL
Sorry have to go to Japan!

The biggest problem is getting the owner of the body of water to let you use a chemical... Parents cabin lake used to be terrible. Then the lake association sprayed and it's not weedy at all. Side effects from spraying and fertilizer use on the lake is a nasty baby sh!t green lake:(

And it's not cheap!!!!

We used "Grass Carp" on a lake an only used like 6 or 7. Lake size about 10 acres. Never had a problem and the lake looked great. I don't know if they are the same as Japanese Carp or not. Its a lot closer than Japan.

Copper sulphate from your local farm supply store or nursery, it will kill all the weed and underwater grasses and leave the lake clear but as previously stated its not cheap.

Hi Tony,

We used a chemical to remove weeds from one of our ponds in the past. It is expensive for sure. Generally you have to apply it early in the season. I cannot speak to the Canadian laws governing the private use of these chemicals. Most municipalities in the states were not receptive to private individuals using them in their ponds. Most municipalities want you to use licensed and bonded companies to do the work. Now you are talking expensive. A lot of folks apply them in small lakes and ponds themselves. We purchased the treatment the last time about ten years ago. I do not have the company name. Probably can find the info on line. When we had use of the lake on Belle Isle, the city had a weed harvester. It was a converted hay cutter that did and adequate job. Two problems. The first was getting the city to cut. The second was the club had to clean the cut weeds off the surface and shore line. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!! JB

Tony, reach out to Randy Rap. Our Beamsville pond is usually problematic. He mentioned a product that seemed to work.

Our pond was great. Japanese Coy were put in 30 years ago when they were very small and purchased from a local fish store. Became over 4 feet long but never an issue at races. Use Blue Vale once a year in the Spring and you're good to go.

Hi Tony, I know that your club uses a city park lake / pond as a running site. This is the reason I mentioned municipalities as often as I did. Dumping chemicals into these lakes without permission could be your exit visa. Just a word of caution!!!

Appreciate the suggestions and advice we are just being proactive in discovering whats out there no issues so far

Don't ask anyone from Colorado about "weed control", You might not get the answer you were looking for!

An old remedy to kill weeds in local farm ponds was to sink a few bales of STRAW in the water around the pond. I don't know, and nobody can tell me why it works, but it seems to. It is ecologically friendly, it won't change the color of the water, and there are no fish to run over. Get a few bales from a local farmer and try it, you have nothing ot lose but a few bucks.

What you're looking for here is Barley straw. Best to put it loosely into onion bags and weight it down just below the surface of the water. When the straw breaks down it lets off some sort of organic that helps control weeds. Larry Walsh and I researched and came up with a few fixes several years ago when the London pond was out of control. The straw was one of a few things we tried the first year. We also introduced Koi and Blue Vail aquatic dye at the same time. Once it was under control the dye was the only thing needed on a yearly basis to keep it that way.

Not sure how effective the Koi were but they sure look pretty now. Seen one the other day that must have been 25lbs. Lol
