Hi,

Totally new to RC boats, and could use some advice. I have built RC planes from kits and from scratch years ago and am getting back into the hobby now that kids are older. I'm getting a Zipp Kits ABox Crackerbox kit and Pro Vee and will run stock in both. I understand Zenoah G260PUM is the size, but are they the only brand allowed? If there are others, who are they, and how do they compare to the Zenoah?

I'm totally new to gas engines, having always flown nitro. Are there any websites or resources you guys would recommend that would provide information about how they operate, maintenance, tuning, rebuilding, etc.?

Lastly, any building/tuning tips for the ABox would be appreciated, since I will build that first. I also want to try to paint it and get decals to make it scale-like, so if you know a source for crackerbox graphics that would be cool.

Thanks folks.

Todd

If you're racing then yes. Don't get me started on that though as I've advocated for using other brands.

There are no real decals that I know of for C-Boxes. Sign shops can make whatever you want but follow the rules as far as lettering when you make the numbers. My sister does all of mine for a lot of my boats, she's got both laser and plotter cutters.

The manuals that came with your kits should give you some help, check the NAMBA or IMPBA rule books for what's legal and not.

NAMBA runs two crackerbox hull styles, open and classic. Any of the gas engine types can be used, but most races specify either G1 (26 cc with only simple modifications) or GX1 (open 26 cc like Quickdraw or CMB) engines. G1 engines can run in GX engine classes. I've never run a stock engine in a crackerbox. Modified engines can be purchased at Gizmotors and others. Your Zipkit wood boat can run in either open or classic crackerbox. Watch the bottom V angle. NAMBA crackerbox rules require a smaller angle then IMPBA.

I just wrote a series of articles on how to modify Zenoahs and their clones. See the NAMBA Propwash (under news) October 2015 and April 2016 issues.

One suggestion for less maintenance do not use gas with ethanol in it find a station near your house that sells ethanol free gas also known as Pure Gas

Check this link to find a station; http://www.pure-gas.org/

Alcohol will mess up your rubber carb parts much faster than ethanol free gas.

Bill is right. ethanol destroys the rubber parts in the carbs.

If you can't find ethanol free gas, it's easy to remove it yourself.

Ethanol is water soluble so if you put a gallon of gas in a clear jug with a spiggot on it, then add 2 to 4 cups of water, seal the jug shake the hell out of it, then let it sit over night, by tomorrow since water is heavier than gas, all the water will have settled to the bottom. Now, tilt the jug up and let the water out through the spiggot and you've got Ethanol free gas.

Guys,

Great information, especially about the ethanol in the gas. I'll track down an ethanol free source nearby.

Thanks.

I use Coleman or Ozark Trail camp stove fuel. No nasty gas odor, no additives, very long shelf life and a lot of other pluses.

The best price that I've found it for is at Menard's. Mix your oil the same and no needle changes.
