is anyone on here drag racing rc nitro cars ,if so what size engine is used for the 1/10 scale cars

Jeff,

I just got into them this year. There are several sizes used depending upon class you want to run. 21 size are most common. A few .12. The classes also vary based upon chassis type - dragster, funny car, etc.

I use to build a few tanks for some of the prostock and Top Fuel cars.. they were cute as a bugs ear!

Here are a few photos of my car. It is a 21 powered nitro dragster. The main car chassis is from Drag Race Concepts. It has a 30" wheelbase. The engine is a Picco Torque 21 for drag racing. The tuned pipe is a Macs 21 for drag racing. The fuel tank is 1.0 oz. Uses a two channel radio - steering and then throttle/brake. The drag strip is 132 ft timed length.

Just like the boats, there is a learning curve! I am in the Dallas TX area and luckily there are a fair amount of people into RC Drag Racing, so that helps.

For a 21 dragster, low 1.5 sec ET is real good. This is in the 80-90 mph range. Kind of amazing considering how short they run.

Some of the electric cars are in the 1.3 - 1.4 sec range over 100mph. They are just a blur when they run.

Also the 1/4 scale dragsters in some of the YouTube videos are a little different than the nitro ones. The 1/4 scales are larger both in wheelbase and engine size but not as fast. I will see if I can find some good nitro run videos.

interesting and impressive! I guess the 1/4 Scale dragsters are running 4-cycle (gasoline) spark-plug engines? That's probably why ET is less than nitro cars I'm guessing? They look like chain-saw engines. Funny, at low (resting) idle they have an exhaust "rapp" similiar to the real thing

David,

That is correct in they typically use a gas engine for the 1/4 scale.

The nitro cars are light. For a 21 dragster, it weighs 2.5 lbs.

Jeff,

The engine I use is a Picco Torque 21. Look up Kevcoracing.com. They are the Picco Torque distributor. The drag engine they sell is fairly new and not as common. More popular seems to the Nova Rossi engines - 35 plus, Kangroo, etc.

I have been r/c drag racing for almost 30 years, I have been coming to International waters for years for info on engines. The r/c drag hobby has been hit by the economy 20 years back we had 120 racers and probably 200+ cars in 10 classes now the class structure is different but still fun. The records for the top classes are electric 1.12 @121.00 and nitro is 1.47 @ 90.5 this is in 132 feet. Look at the IMDRA site for photos and vids or my club So Cal MHRA. it's all fun....................jw

Here's my set up ;-) it's a MK engineering 1/4 scale Funny car 53cc Solo gas engine with custom zommie headers. The body is a Oldsmobile from the 90's ( like john force olds and Cruz pedregon) it's a collectors item since these where build in the 80's and 90's and are no longer made. Actually have a fully functional big catcher as well. My funny car is around 60 L x18 W x15 H.

John Muldowney hand built his moms pink dragster, a .21 1/10 scale nitro burner dragster back in the 70's,,and it was nice, Mechanical auto 3 speed gearbox and a 3 disk slipper style clutch,,before there was such a thing for RC. There was a article in Hot Rod with the story and a pic of him holding it. Cannot find that clip now.
