Don't know if anyone else has started to mount the cowls with magnets. Figured it would allow a smoother flow of air over the top section / cowl sides. Each has a different cowl locking setup. The 400 was built first. But like how the 320 came out.

NX-320:

3/4" x 1/8" with hole is used on both the cowl and hull. 1/8" balsa used to house the magnets. 30 min epoxy to holding. 1/64" sheeting to cover the magnet on the cowl.

PX-400:

Basicly the same setup, but had solid 7/8" x 1/8" on the cowl. While building the boat. The inner cowl side had a 3/4" hole made. The outer side was left alone.

I suspect what you will find is you are going to want the magnets to touch.

Let us know how it goes.

The locking process is better seen. This is the 320. The cowl sides need to be moved outward to unlock it.

My PX-300 was my first attempt at using magnets. It does not have a locking process, just the 7/8" magnets. During normal running, it holds on just fine. The few times the boat has rolled, the cowl easily comes off. No tears, rips, etc.. The only issue I see here is taking the boat to the water. Tunnels normally are tossed into the water via holding onto the cowl. That is why I came up with some type of locking system. The 400 is set that the cowl will easily also come off if heading into the water the wrong way. It takes a good push to move it forward to unlock the magnets. The locking system is set to make sure the cowl does not come UP from the tunnel. The 320 has more of the locking process. Still have the NX-300 to set up. The magnets are on the boat, just not the cowl. That cowl is lexan..

Sunday was the first time out for the boats. The NX-300 and NX-320 cowls work just perfect for launching the boat as normal. Both use the locking process shown above. The PX-300 and NX-400 are tossed in by holding onto the left sponson. The PX-300 has no locking process

. Since it was windy, the boat flipped twice. Both times the cowl came off with no damage. The NX-400 will let the cowl slide forward while holding onto the cowl. It could be a hazardous issue if not handled properly. I'll have to look into making that a locking process in the near future.

I did forget that the Woodstuff boat was my first attempt to use magnets last year. The magnets do touch each other. But the weight of the boat does not hold the cowl securely when holding on to it. To offset this concern, I added the Zipp Kits deluxe cowl hold down set to secure the cowl. The magnets on the Woodstuff are 5/8". I can post pics if anyone is interested.
