We are doing some remodeling and the room/ bar area is going to change.

So I took a picture of all the different style of trophies that were given out over the last 35-40 years.

The MAN trophy is in my opinion the most distinctive.

The were given out by the SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN BOAT CLUB.

They were made from powdered pecan shells and mixed with resin and molded.

I was able to win 3 of them

Who else won one and how many??

Nice, ran one of them Cobra riggers for many years. Great boat From Don W.

That sure looks like a Don W. rigger on top of the trophy. Had a couple of those too Ray.

Doc,

I have several trophies much like those in your stockpile!! What I have found satisfying is donating the ones that have lost significance to the "Special Olympics" and then seeing that what I thought was almost trash is now Someones Treasure!!!

Later!!

Pat

I do not see any US1's Doc. Where are you hiding them? Nice trophy case, I need to build something for mine like you have. Mine are in boxes right now, ready to pull them out for display.

I am not sure where the US 1 is located

Good idea on the donation to Special Olympics

The cabinets are full also

Now I like a good heat of racing blowing and going. Not racing now for trophies,

I’ve got a couple of man trophies and numerous plaques they gave out at the spring races. Neat trophy. I’m getting ready for the fall Nats or I’d have time to dig them out and post up. I picked up a composite sponson to one of those avenger boats and it was so heavy I swore it was made of the same material as the man trophies. Lol. Jeff Lutz

Several years ago I won a "Man Trophy" at the Southern Gentlemen's race. I also won a "Geaux for the Silver" when all the other boats jumped the start and I was able to hold on. The Southern Gentlemen had a great autumn event on a par with Hobart and the Fall Nats. I've got my fingers crossed that the Indie Club can get another one going again.

I was an SGRA member for many years, into the early 90's, and helped make alot of those trophies thru the years at Don Wagners shop, he had the molds and club members would spend hours making them ! I earned a couple over the years. Still to this day,,a very distinctive and "one off" trophy, made by racers, for racers. Thanks for the memories Doc !-Nick-

Does SGRA still exist

I raced with them in the 70's(wasnt in their club) and coveted but never won one of those trophies(close doesnt count)

More often than not they raced "run what you brung" and I brung a 40 crapshooter with an OPS40

which was a competitive boat motor combination looking for a better driver

Ruchard, SGRA disbanded some 20 plus years ago, landowner sold off property along the pond, houses went up, boats went away. There's still a few of us old SGRA guys running out of the Voodoo Model Boat Club.
