Why is it you don't see more tunnels running bigger than .45 motors ? I know cost of fuel and hard to find parts but still .i have a .67 and a .45 and debating which to run for open tunnel
 
The boat is a qs370 ml boat works. Modified by dick loeb for nitro .I've run it with both motor's out of the box and the .67 gives more smiles per gallon
 
Lack of motor manufactures would be my guess. Once K&B stop producing quantity, the classes dropped off at the club level. No other mfg has built a complete "stock" motor/lower larger than the 3.5. It's been a few years since attending the OTC race, but believe it holds the larger classes. Other "large" races have theses classes, but club races suffer. Unless there is a large amount of members that run the larger motors. I'm in the process of rebuilding my K&B redhead. Also working on a 11cc Areotech build for next season. Hope to run them at a race or two if possible.

Its all about lack of available engines. Novarossi World is working really hard to add additional outboard engine choices for all of us. The new 21 and 46 outboard powerheads have quickly become the engine of choice for these classes. They are currently working to perfect the numbers and details on the 91 DD and have discussed a 60 sized Novarossi next. Once the latest engines hit production, adding a PTO and extended crank to accomodate an outboard flywheel would be a breeze if the interest in growing these other classes is there.
 
I have converted several inboard engines into outboards, including OPS 80, Mac 67, Picco 45 and several .21 car engines
 
The engines are not there along with the hulls needed for these big engines, also big question would there be enough people out there to run them and make a class

I think the 60 sized outboard class would definitely have the support. F/Open Tunnel with a 91 outboard support is the bigger question.
 
I love my big nitro cats .the sound and the power but with my allergy issue's running tunnels is wiser .no rubber mounts or starting belts .i could see .60 being supported .90 id like to know where your gonna put the fuel .you would have to use a gas tunnel hull .
 
I built a couple of 84 inch Apache offshore boats with twin two cylinder counter/rotating Quickdraws. Each cylinder had a water pump and a direct feed water cooling system. I used a one gallon plastic gas can. Imagine a 65lb boat running 80mph with four cylinders cranking 15,000 + rpms
 
We dont have open tunnel in NAMBA, i had asked the tunnel GURU while back about 67s was told no interest and money

I think the 67 outboard class popularity would return very quickly if we have a powerhead available. 36" hulls for this class are readily available. Having a 91 outboard may be a different story. To Michael's point, the current gas tunnel designs would be an excellent starting point for this class.

I want to see that 91 go through the corner. I am sure It will be angry coming off the turns. Maybe a 40-42 inch hull would settle it down enough to get it around the track.

I think you are exactly right Carl. A 40-42" hull would be the perfect F and Open Tunnel combination for a 91 outboard engine.

I think Shane Adderly will tell you different Carl. Your 34" Hornet with his Mac .84 handles that power just fine.

I think we had to do everything we could to pry that radio out of Stan's hands so we could give it back to Shane when he ran it at the Herb race last year. Lol. Maybe Shane can chime in and post a pic.

The main issue for the larger .67-.91 outboards to survive outside of a motor being produced is the same issue for the .21-.45s, pipe selection. There aren't any manufacturers anymore. You think you could talk to Nova Rossi about that Ron? With the only other competitor being SPP, they could have a significant monopoly on the market if they could come up with something competitive with the Irwin and SPP brands.

Great point Mitch Jr. Access to more outboard pipe choices has always been a challange in this hobby. Something for Novarossi to consider for sure.

Think it set some records to , with bad bearing, it's a beast lol( the key is to drive it like you stole it)
