I have a brief test run of my Raptor Mono using 15S1P on MGM ESC and Lehrer 3080 motor, after about 10 laps (not top speed) coming back, one of the pack is swollen and leak with liquid coming out, the cell temperature is 80 Degrees Centigrade plus. The local temperature in the sun is 35+ on the beach.

What might have happened ?

I didn't check the voltage before running while all battery are fully charged, after the incident as I was not intending to take it back home and about to throw that into the salt water bucket, but a friend took it and intending to repair or separate the good and bad cells in his workshop.

Tyler, yes, the 3080 is really a quiet and smooth motor and don't even hear anything when it is peaking.

My next trial would probably be using 15S2P batteries.

This kind of damage is most often seen when the packs are overheated by over-discharging the packs. A starting temperature of 95*F doesn't help. A cell temperature of almost 180*F is enough to cause damage to lower quality packs, and even high quality packs can succum. Exactly what were the packs - brand, capacity and C rating? If we knew the pack voltage after the run we could be of more help.

.

What mah were the packs and what C rating did they have. It may take 10P of a 10C pack to equal what you would get with 1P and a 100C pack.

They are earlier packs of 4000Mah 30C 5S1P ACE cells, three packs connected in series to produce 15S.

Thanks all for the advice, that was a first water test of the boat, will probably put adequate juice on the next high power run.
