Hey guys, Im wondering who out there builds these starters these days, I seen the one in the manufacturers section from Daniels Racing but would prefer one that has protection around the LIPO,

those batteries freak me out but they do really work well on the big block engines. Just looking for someone to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Greg,

The packs I have on them now are wrapped in extra heavy duty 1mm thick rubber heat shrink and provides all the protection it needs for normal use. Of coarse you wouldn't throw it in the trunk or truck with battery attached hammering around and banging around with and against other things.

It is somewhat protected except from the back as the starter is taller than the pack and the pack is 1" up from bottom and 1" down from the top and the back plate is as wide as the pack is.

Hard packs are available but really not necessary.

You do have to handle a starter with reasonable care and as long as you do that I think you would be fine.

Hey Daniel, I had one of Boris starters at one time and believe I had a 4 cell battery on it, one of the reasons I sold it was that it spun the motor too fast such that it didn’t allow the motor to fire as it should. I see in your add that you use a 3 cell LIPO, does that make the pulley spin slower or am I just confused, I am a newbie as it pertains to LIPO’s, I remember chatting with Boris about that once but can’t remember what he told me.

Greg,

Yes the 4 cell would be over driving the motor 25% and it would be spinning fast and start that much more abruptly. The motors are 12 volt and while they can be overdriven intermittently it is not necessary to use more than 3S to start anything I have ever come across.

Pulley diameter also has a large effect on the rpm the starter motor spins the engine. This starter actually has the smaller diameter on it already to lower starting speed and add torque while still big enough to have enough belt contact area to limit slippage..

Will you take old starter from your skidoo or motorcycle and will build handle and push button start with relay and machine lathe for pulley wheel Can use Lipo 11 volt 3S 5000

i got 1 similar off ebay a couple years ago, for like $70. no relay just a heavy duty switch and handle setup. works perfect with 3s using it now on 4s cause the 3 cell died. GOOBS of knuckle breaking juice lol

the guy i got from store is gone but its pretty much this. (which is what he had a few months ago last i saw) >>> https://www.ebay.com/itm/Powerful-Rotor-Starter-For-26CC-Gasoline-Nitro-RC-Boats/262770326780?hash=item3d2e54fcfc:g:bBUAAOSwa~BYWLn5

I've been using lipo powered starters or over 10 years. I just made a wood block glued to the side of a standard 12 volt starter with Velcro to hold the battery. I use 4S packs that are too tired for race use in my electric boats. Starters don't take nearly as much current. A 12 volt starter works fine with either 4S or 6S power. I use 6S to start gas engines but 4S will be fine for nitro. A single charge on a 5000 mah pack will start several boats all day with juice left over.

bermudadude is correct those starters are still avaiable on Ebay $75-130.00 depending on shipping and who has them available. I've seen these exact starters (not the Boris ones) on several videos from different racers around the world. so they must work ok. 3s lipo is more then enough juice to start up most boats.
