Guys, we have a new member "mach10shooter" by the name of Chris. He's building a Lil Raskel and plans to use a 15 dynamite engine out of a Bud Pro Boat. He doesn't like the dumas hardware and wants to make it a solid drive shaft.

He's a designer in a tool shop and before that a machinest. He also builds and flies pattern type aircraft. Obviously, a very good builder from the pictures he sent me on his progress.

Anyway, since I don't know a thing about his boat I thought a bunch of you guys that have built and run them could help "except for maybe the builder of HYDRO PLOW". Sorry P.J.

He's E-mailed me for information on setting up one but I can't seem to get him to post on the forum so I thought this could get him started.

Hope this is OK with you Chris,

Don

except for maybe the builder of HYDRO PLOW
<_<

Seriously though, have him forget about the original "shaft support/fifth sponson"...go with an exposed stuffing tube and adjustable strut.

And don't glue on the rear spoons...use double sided tape.

YES I second that !!!! Don't go with a fixed strut and sponsons. I have a cheap one I will sell him if he want's to go with the fixed design. I got mine to run OK, but it really needs to be torn apart and redone. The original design is very poor.

i got one a while ago already built so i am in the middle of modding it out i used regular sponson tubes and made it wider cut off the rear sponsons and put little ones on the bottom of it like on tj performance boats i think ill put a fantom .12 car motor in it and see what itl do

Thats how we ALL Learned, No question is "STUPID" WE all learn something new everyday.

Ask away.

LOL Don, give us his email and we can all mail him and welcome him.

Tom

Thank you everyone for the nice welcome. As Don mentioned I am building a Dumas Little Racal. The hull is complete except for finish & driveline. The front sponsons are mounted & the rears are not. I have included a pic of a drawing I made showing the engine mounted @ 8 deg. & the shaft @ 6.5 deg. I would like to use a solid shaft just for the ease & I already have the hardware. If this setup will serious affect performance I will change it & go with a flex shaft. I plan on running this boat for fun and not racing it. I will try to send a few pictures later of the hull.

Everyone please give me you honest opinions

Thank you

Chris,

Save yourself the heartache and put in a flex shaft. The boat looks very good. Nice work!

Less vibration. Easier to adjust.

The L'il Rascal was designed for a .09 to .10 engine, what 15 years ago or more? You're probably giving it twice the power it was designed for. The way yours is set up, it will really lift the rear. The prop shaft should be nearly horizontal...easier to accomplish with a flex shaft.

BTW...Welcome aboard! Looks like you do nice work.

Go with a flex shaft there are many props that work with a flex set up not many for a hard shaft that is old tecnology perhaps you could find some old JG props that would work but they have been out of buisiness for thirty years.

You will have to make or buy a strut to hold the shaft at the back of the boat. The strut will allow you to adjust the depth and angle of the prop.

As for the rear sponsons, don't glue them on. Use foam double stick tape. This will allow you to adjust them if needed.

The boat looks good, and even better with that engine in it. Don't do the mistakes that PJ and I did and you should have a fun boat this summer! Mine looks good on the shelf, and that's it!
